What is “AI inbreeding,” the phenomenon that threatens artificial intelligence?

DECRYPTION - A discreet but worrying phenomenon is reportedly weakening artificial intelligence. The cause is an internal mechanism that could, over time, impoverish it and reduce its reliability.
For several months, a strange symptom has been puzzling internet users: images generated by artificial intelligence are taking on a yellowish tint. Whether it's memes, portraits, or videos, this visual bias has become so widespread that numerous tutorials for "unyellowing" these images are now circulating online. For specialists, it's not a question of aesthetics. This standardization could well be the sign of a deeper crisis threatening AI. The cause? A form of digital "inbreeding" that occurs when AI models train on data... already produced by other AIs. "Training future generations of models on previous generations ends up causing model collapse," explains Alain Goudey, Deputy Director General in charge of digital at Neoma Business School.
